How to Boost Self Esteem and Happiness by Exercising

If you've often wondered how to boost self esteem and happiness, the answer could lie in a vigorous gym session, a brisk jog in the park or a quick dip in your local pool. Why? Because studies have shown that subjective wellbeing, AKA the feel good factor, is higher in those who exercise regularly.

If you've ever strolled out of the gym whistling, brimming with energy and in a positive frame of mind, you're not alone. In fact, these emotions are actually the most commonly reported effects of working out.

Not only that, but self esteem, which is commonly accepted as the most valid single indicator of mental health, is predisposed to an uptick when you exercise regularly. It's also incredibly useful when attempting to address low level mental disorders, such as a lack of self-worth.

You Are Unique

When it comes to exercise, there's no one-size-fits-all approach.

As an individual, your response to exercise is different from the next person, so the duration and intensity – as well as the type of exercise – required to produce a mood enhancing effect will obviously vary.

Consequently, it requires a certain degree of trial and error, formulating a plan that will suit your individual preferences and instil an exercise path that you will be happy to adhere to over the long term.

To do this, here are a few tips ...

  • Try to make your workouts challenging but non-competitive
  • Try to concentrate on mastering specific skills
  • Choose activities that involve social interaction
  • Ease yourself into exercise if you're a beginner

With this in mind, try Pilates or yoga classes in your gym's studio. Alternatively, use the gym for core strength training to tone your tummy and put your body and mind on the fast track to a happier and healthier future.
