Goal Setting: Get Your New Year Off to a Flyer

Goal setting is an essential part of achieving long-term success.

Whether you want to compete in a marathon or simply feel better about your body, to help you achieve the results you desire, why not take advantage of the SMART system?

Typically, a SMART goal satisfies the following components:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Timed

This helps you realise, assess and accomplish your goals without losing sight of your target. Here's how the SMART system works ...

Specific

What do you want to achieve exactly? For example, do you want to run a marathon, look great for your wedding or simply shape up for the beach?

Measurable

By recording certain parameters (e.g. weight, circumference, fitness level, etc) then comparing these after a period, it'll enable you to quantify positive change.

Achievable

Some would argue that you can achieve virtually anything you set your mind to. However, bearing in mind your current fitness levels, previous exercise experience, and resources, try to assess what's truly attainable for you within the realms of your lifestyle.

Realistic

This is similar to achievable, but focuses more on the general reality. Whilst it's possible for you to make significant positive changes to your wellbeing, altering your genetic make-up and deciding that a career in the royal ballet awaits is far from realistic.

Timed

Unless you build time parameters into the goals, you could perhaps procrastinate and end up more frustrated and unfocused. We suggest six and 12 weeks as ideal timelines.
