If you're keen to invite stillness and peace into your yoga practice, try reading the poems below to enhance your awareness and instil a contemplative focus to your session ...

1. Joyful Patience

As I breathe in – I know I am breathing in
As I breathe out – I know I am breathing out

As I breathe in – I feel I am breathing in
As I breathe out – I feel I am breathing out

As I breathe in - the breathe is flowing in
As I breathe out – the breathe is flowing out

As I breathe in – I smile
As I breathe out – I share that smile

Breathing in...breathing out

2. Trust and Truth

As I open my heart
May I be free
As I open my heart
With clarity I'll see

The inner seed of love and truth

As I open my heart
May I experience peace
As I open my heart
Letting go of fear to feel the release

A journey of letting go

As I open my heart
May trust grow
As I open my heart
The magical experience of life can flow

When in truth – truth becomes

3. Our Deepest Fear

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is not our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves: Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you NOT to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

Nelson Mandela

4. I Have Time
(from prayers of Life by M Quoist)

I have time,
I have plenty of time,
all the time that is given to me.
The days of my years,
The hours of my days,
they are all mine.
Mine to fill quietly, calmly,
but to fill completely up to the brim.

I have all the fullness of those years,
and all the length of those days.
I have all the time that I need,
from the sunrise to the moons awakening,
through the stillness of the night
to the dawn breaking.

I have the stillness of time,
the essence of eternity,
the silence of peace.
I will not rush time.
I will take it and use it carefully,
for this moment will not come again.

In the work of my hands,
in the creative force within my mind,
in the repose and tranquillity of my spirit,
I have time – I have plenty of time.
If I use it – if I use it carefully,
I have all the time that I need.
So I will regard it as a most precious gift indeed.

5. Happiness

Happiness is a butterfly,
Which, when pursued is always just beyond our grasp,
But which,
If you will sit down quietly,
May alight upon you

Nathaniel Hawthorne

6. Peace, Peace, Peace

"May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where
you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are
born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have
received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be
content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into
your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us."
