With National Bike Week starting on 9th June, there’s no better time to rediscover a simple, enjoyable way to get outside and get moving: cycling.
Why Cycling?
Cycling ticks all the right boxes. It’s great for your body, your mind, and even the environment. From a physical perspective, it helps strengthen your heart and lungs, lowering the risk of conditions like heart disease and stroke.
Better still, cycling is a low-impact activity, meaning you can build fitness without putting strain on your joints, helping you stay active and injury-free for longer.
Boosting Your Mental Wellbeing
Beyond the physical benefits, cycling offers a powerful mental reset. Being out in natural light and surrounded by fresh air provides what’s often called an ecosensory wellness experience, helping you feel more energised, grounded and connected. It’s a simple way to lift your mood and clear your mind.
Finding the Right Bike for You
According to our award-winning Fitness Consultant, Dean Hodgkin, choosing the right bike is key to enjoying your cycling experience:
- Road bikes are ideal for speed and fitness, with a forward-leaning riding position
- Mountain bikes are perfect for exploring trails, parks and woodlands
- Folding bikes are great for commuting and convenience
- Hybrid (city) bikes offer comfort for relaxed rides or trips to the shops
Getting Set Up Properly
A few simple adjustments can make all the difference:
- Set your saddle to hip height
- Position handlebars so you lean forward slightly without rounding your back
- Keep your ankles relaxed and in a natural position
When tackling hills, shift into a lower gear early and find a steady rhythm. Standing on the pedals can help on steeper climbs, and shifting your hand position regularly will prevent fatigue.
Ride Comfortably and Safely
To make your cycling experience enjoyable, consider investing in a few essentials:
- A pump, water bottle and holder
- A bell and optional rack
- Padded cycling shorts (you’ll thank us later!)
Keep your bike in good condition with regular servicing, and always prioritise safety, wear bright or reflective clothing, use lights when needed, and communicate clearly with other road users. While helmets won’t prevent accidents, they can significantly reduce injury.
