HOW A SPA BREAK CAN BOOST THE EFFECT OF WEIGHT LOSS DRUGS

According to a YouGov poll, nearly 7% of the UK population are using or have used weight loss drugs with a further 8% considering doing so, equating to 8.25 million people. The popularity is due to the proven effectiveness with average reductions in body weight being around 15% for Wegovy and up to 22.5% for Mounjaro. Whilst a spa break affords the opportunity to relax, reset and recharge both mind and body, it can also provide valuable support on your wellbeing journey while taking these GLP-1 medications.

Our award-winning fitness expert, Dean Hodgkin, provides tips to ensure your next visit to Ragdale Hall Spa helps to optimise your results.

THINK STRONG

One of the downsides of the rapid weight loss achieved through GLP-1 medications is the loss of, not only body fat but also lean muscle tissue. This is concerning because it will lead to a drop in your metabolism, meaning your body will retain rather than burn calories and is the reason why many people quickly regain weight after they stop taking the medication. The answer is resistance training 2-3 times per week, so pop into the gym and one of our qualified trainers can show you some key exercises and provide guidance on how to get the best from them. We could even create a personalised programme for you to take home with you, whether you wish to use a gym or workout at home.

PRIORITISE PROTEIN

Weight loss goals are achieved through the medication suppressing appetite, increasing satiety and reducing ‘food noise’, or cravings. Although intake will be lower, it’s essential you get enough protein to help to maintain muscle tissue. Aim for 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight and try to spread this across the day, including breakfast. At mealtimes search the menu for white fish, chicken, egg whites, tofu, low-fat cottage cheese and low-fat Greek yoghurt. These are a little easier on your digestive system than other protein sources an so will help to avoid nausea, which is a common side-effect associated with GLP-1 medication. A great way to ensure you hit your daily target is to add a whey or plant-based protein shake because, as a blended drink, it’s easy to get down.

FACE FACTS

Rapid weight loss can, in some cases, lead to hollowing of the cheeks, sagging jowls, and deepening of wrinkles. However, the good news is that our highly trained Beauty Therapists offer a range of treatments specifically designed to tone the facial muscles and plump the skin resulting in a firmer, fuller appearance.

HYDRATION STATIONS

GLP-1 medications can sometimes reduce thirst as well as appetite, leading to a risk of you becoming dehydrated. Clearly, we hope you will make full use of our fabulous spa facilities and truly immerse yourself in the various heat experiences and pools, so it’s particularly important to ensure you maintain healthy fluid levels. Carry a water bottle with you so you can regularly top up, aiming for around 2.5 litres per day.

ME TIME

Remember a spa break is about much more than the number on the scales. Think of your visit as an investment in your self-care, a time to focus on reducing stress, improving sleep and developing healthy habits that support your overall health and wellbeing.
