Preparing for a charity run

Here at Ragdale Hall, we’re all about health, fitness and good causes – that’s why we strongly encourage as many people as possible to take part in a charity run this summer.

Whether you’re taking part in a shorter run like Race for Life or you’re running a full-blown marathon, you’re doing a great thing for both your charity of choice and your own body.

If you’re not used to running though, it’s not always easy. Fortunately, you can make use of some running tips, designed to turn you from novice to seasoned veteran:

Starting out

First things first, you need to warm up before you run. Simply walking at a brisk pace, marching on the spot or doing some lifts for approximately five minutes should start you off right.

Once that’s out the way, remember it’s important not to overdo things at first. If you’ve never ran properly before, then there’s no point pushing yourself until you can’t go any more. Ease yourself in, and increase your pace and distance gradually over several runs.


Fortunately you don’t need much in the way of equipment to run. However, you do need a good pair of trainers which will support you and reduce the risk of injury.

There are plenty of different varieties on the market, all catered towards different types of feet and runners. Visit a specialist store, and get them to suggest a pair that’ll be right for you.

Don’t fall off the wagon

Once you’re in the habit of running, we’re sure you’ll be more than aware of the benefits. However, like most forms of exercise, if you stop doing it for a while it’s hard to get back in the swing of things.

A good way to avoid this happening is to start running with a friend. Not only will you be able to benefit from the mutual support and extra fun while you’re exercising, you’ll have extra incentive to never cancel. You don’t want to let your friend down, do you?

Have an end treat in mind

The positive vibes that come with getting fitter and raising money for charity should provide plenty of motivation. However, having an end treat for yourself in mind won’t do any harm either.
