If you bought your Mother’s Day gift online this year, you’re part of a rapidly growing trend. For despite the much-publicised poor state of the economy, online sales figures seem to be in rude health.

Figures published recently by online retail research group IMRG Capgemini reveal February’s online shopping results to be 13% ahead of 2008. So whilst high street shopping is languishing in the doldrums, the e-tail sector would appear to be flourishing.

For many sons or daughters living some distance away from their parents, the possibility of buying gifts for mums online is a real life-saver for occasions such as Mothering Sunday and birthdays.

Combining speed and convenience, online purchasing allows gift seekers to take full advantage of modern technology to find that perfect gift.

Amongst the gifts purchased online for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day this year were luxurious spa gifts such as relaxing pamper breaks, plus the ever-popular chocolate specialities and favourite perfumes.

Bought at the touch of a button – in some cases from the other side of the world – these thoughtful gifts were certain to have been well received by hard-working mums, aunts and grannies.

Ever-widening broadband coverage has opened up the possibility of rapid internet shopping to a host of eager new customers worldwide. And all are quick to appreciate the numerous advantages of being able to import the contents of a department store into their own home to browse at leisure.

In fact, when you contemplate the choice between the leisurely comfort of one’s own armchair and an afternoon spent fighting for parking spaces and enduring the rib-crunching crush of the High Street crowds, it’s easy to predict a rosy future for online shopping.
