Liam Tancock - World Champion!
Liam Tancock, the swimmer based at Loughborough University whom Ragdale Hall has sponsored for
the last three years, on Sunday, won a gold medal at the World Swimming Championships in Rome.
After a slightly disappointing Olympics last year, when Liam was a finalist but did not get into the medals, he won the 50 metres backstroke in a world record time. He also beat the world record in the semis!
Caitlin McClatchey, Ragdale’s other sponsored swimmer won bronze in the 4 x 200 metres relay last Thursday.
For twenty four year Liam, it was his third World Championships – in the previous two he has won bronze medals.
Liam said afterwards “I’m just please to be called World Champion and World Record Holder in the same sentence!”
Top swimmers, unlike some elite sportspeople, receive very little funding to cover the considerable personal cost of pursuing world class results and therefore Liam and Caitlin are very grateful for the sponsorship Ragdale have been able to give them. When back at Loughborough between major championships they often enjoy a taste of relaxation and pampering Ragdale style!
